What to Do If Your Vape Falls Into Water
Dropped your vape in the sink, the toilet, a puddle, or the washing machine? Don't panic. Whether you're running a pod kit, a refillable device, or a disposable, a dunk in water doesn't always spell the end. What you do in the first few minutes makes the difference between saving your device and needing a full replacement.
Step 1: Get It Out of the Water Immediately
When sitting, do not leave it. The deeper the time that the device is submerged, the more water penetrates the battery compartment, coil, and the circuit board. Spot it out, but do not shake it about too much. Hard shake will make the water even go deeper into the device rather than out.
Step 2: Power It Off (Do Not Try to Vape It)
Do not press the fire button to determine whether it works or not. The last thing you want to do at this moment is that. When there is water anywhere around the battery, switching it on may short it, destroy the battery permanently, or in extreme cases, may make it overheat. When it is already off, then leave it off at the time.
Step 3: Take It Apart as Much as Possible
This is the most important step for pod kits and refillable vape kits. Separate every component you can:
- Remove the pod or tank from the battery/mod
- Take out the coil if accessible
- Remove any removable batteries
- Take off the mouthpiece or drip tip
With a vape that is disposed of, then you will not be able to open it up as they are sealed. You can continue with the next step however remember sealed devices will be more apt to being permanently damaged as the water cannot easily escape either.
Step 4: Dry Everything Thoroughly
- Clean all the parts using a clean cloth or paper towel.
- In case you have compressed air, blow the water through small holes, air-flow holes, and the charging port.
- Skip the hairdryer. The plastic may be distorted by heat and the battery disordered.
- Allow to dry at a place with warmth at least 24-48 hours. You need not have rice, it scarcely matters. Fresh air does better.
Step 5: Check the Charging Port and Contacts
Most long term problems are as a result of this. When it is fully dry, check the charging port and battery contacts to the presence of a white or chalky residue. Mineral deposition of the water. Use a dry cotton swab to clean it off, or moistened with isopropyl alcohol, with a little water.
Step 6: Reassemble and Test Carefully
After everything is completely dry, that is not only dry to touch, but you are certain that it has fully dried, reassemble it and trial it in a well ventilated area, where there is nothing combustible about it. Should it start and shoot like usual, then you have nothing to worry about. Unless it will accept the charge, there is a spark or a burning smell, or the battery is hot, then stop and never use it again.
Step 7: Know When to Replace vs. Repair
Sometimes a wet vape just won't come back, even if you do everything right.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Coil or pod got wet, battery/mod is fine | Replace just the pod or coil |
| Battery won't hold a charge, or device won't power on after drying | Replace the battery or device |
| Disposable stopped working after water exposure | Replace the whole unit — can't be repaired |
| Charging port corroded | Clean gently; replace if charging still fails |
