User Guide to All Types of Coils

A vape coil is basically a rounded metal wire in your device which burn the E-liquid and produce flavour and clouds. The coil is surrounded by a cotton wick which soaks up the E juice which is burnt into vapours by burning through the coil. So right information about this important component is inevitable to start your journey of vaping (or take an insight about the dynamics if you are already vaping). Different types of coils are used for different devices based on the factors like device type, cloud production, pod type etc. Let us take a quick tour of different types and their properties.

STAINLESS STEEL

Commonly stated as SS coil is a unique type that can be used in both variable wattage mode and temperature control mode. It heats up normally faster than the kanthal wire meaning that it has low resistance. Stainless steel is an alloy of chromium, carbon and nickel compounds. A good choice if you want to switch between temperature mode and wattage mode. Good choice for advanced vapers. It gives a clean and pure taste.

KANTHAL

The most commonly used coil wire in most vapes. It is an alloy of iron-chromium-aluminium. A recommended choice for beginners as it is cheap and user friendly. Available almost everywhere and in different resistance ranges to suit your device. Kanthal wire works with both sub-ohm and mouth-to-lung vape styles. It works fairly good with different wattage levels so can be used in various devices. It is stiff and easily holds its shape even after being formed into coils. Overall a good wire especially for those who do not want to dwell much into details.

NICKEL

Normally called NI200 is a pure nickel coil used in temperature control mode only. It cannot be used with wattage control mode. So it is advisable to be used by advanced vapers. It is also used only in advanced devices. Due to temperature control mode, it can work in high temperature and generally have a higher temperature coefficient. The major disadvantage of it is that it's a soft metal and can be easily deformed while wicking. It is generally used by advanced vapers to produce large clouds and strong flavour.

iCHROME

NiChrome as the name suggests is an alloy of nickel and chromium normally called Ni80 (80% Nickel, 20% Chromium). Similar to Kanthal in most of the functions except lower resistance than kanthal. It means that it will ramp up (Heat up) fast and have a lower melting point. So it is advisable to not dry vape these coils as they will burn up easily. Try not to use at maximum wattage when it is dry. As kanthal, it can only be used in variable wattage mode. So can be used in various kits and devices and produce bigger clouds than a normal kanthal coil.

TITANIUM

A bit controversial due to the concerns over the safety to use titanium and its burning. Some say the heating above 1200 Fahrenheit (648 Centigrade) release titanium oxide which is toxic. It is also a temperature control mod only so will be used primarily in advanced vape devices. it cannot be used in wattage control mode. Due to its high melting point, it works really good at high temperatures and does not lose its shape on wicking. Due to the problems stated above it may be hard to find in the local market. It is advisable, however, to not use it when dry because it may release those toxic if used dry.

MESH

A Mesh coil is simply a normal metal strip with holes in it. The function of these holes is to increase the surface area of the coil that comes in contact with the E-liquid. So the more liquids burns when it come in contact with the coil and more cloud and flavour is produced. It has been adopted quite extensively in vaping industry by many manufacturers now. This type is usually made from stainless steel or a kanthal metal. Mesh coil can be replaced by the regular coil to produce good flavour and can be used in many pods and devices. The mesh also seems to increase the life of the coil and more stable power efficiency when used instead of a regular coil.
